Managing Innovation within the Enterprise

Harnessing corporate entrepreneurship for lasting competitive advantage

“Rapid and cost-effective innovation is the primary source of lasting competitive advantage in the 21st century. But there can be a fine line between entrepreneurial behaviors and insubordination. We have to identify, encourage and flexibly manage inhouse entrepreneurs without giving them license to…'drill below the waterline' of our existing businesses.” (Gifford Pinchot and Ron Pellman, 1999)

There are many sources of innovation. Organizations often look for innovation outside the firm, contracting for research, licensing technologies, initiating or acquiring innovative start-ups or small businesses. Some corporations look within for sources of innovation.

Corporate entrepreneurship-or the encouragement of entrepreneurial innovation from within the organization (also called 'intrapreneurship')-offers corporations useful opportunities to revitalize their business, improve their performance, and leverage existing investments in intellectual property, technologies, production and distribution infrastructure.

In many instances, knowledge organizations will work with corporate entrepreneurs to identify, deliver, and manage new products and business activities. But knowledge organizations are not always prepared for some of the challenges their partners may face.

Corporate entrepreneurship can be one of the most challenging forms of corporate innovation. One of the most important of these challenges is that businesses that have existed for some time will have established staff, values, structures, cultures, and politics that do not necessarily encourage experimentation and innovation.

This workshop will help managers in knowledge organizations recognize and cost-effectively address the challenges of corporate entrepreneurship, both within their own organization and within client companies, to create lasing customer relationships and to improve their own management culture and practice.
