Calibre targets: Intranet-based job tools and policies |
We are usually good at strategy in Knowledge organizations. Action plans with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) let staff know what is expected of them. We hire intelligent, creative, highly educated staff. But do we spend enough time providing job tools that will help our staff deliver on expectations? If we do provide a staff job toolkit, does it offer job tools that are clear, relevant, accessible, consistent, and aligned with our strategy?
Auditing good business and professional practices in order to develop or acquire job tools is no simple task. Potential job tools need to be assessed on several levels: for user comprehension and satisfaction, for impediments to application, as well as for ROI and potential impact on the business. But the customized job toolkits that result from such reviews can have enormous positive impact on the business and provide real competitive advantages.
For example, consider the potential effect on your staff performance of an intranet that centralizes clear, well-indexed plain-English policies in key areas like project management, HR, OH&S, lab practices, publication and IP policies, financial, facilities and resource management.
Some effective job tools you may wish to consider include a facility that encourages staff to recognize their colleagues and rewards both the nominee and the nominator for collegial behavior, enhancing teamwork and staff motivation.
A business ‘knowledge center’ that provides links to client profiles; market insights; customizable promotional collateral; and clear, simplified templates for reports and agreements may help your staff interact better and more consistently with prospective customers.
Calibre Communications offers workshops, coaching, and step-by-step guides to help you develop your own customized staff job tools and deliver them via your intranet.
